Feliz ano novo! We hope you had a memorable time celebrating the entry of 2023. We sure did, and we’re still a little hungover. That’s why the calendar of events is quite light this week. We all probably need a recovery week with fewer activities anyway, huh? 😉

Wizard of Oz ice skating show, at AM Arena (MAR Shopping), 2 start times
This is the last week to see this adaptation of the classic L. Frank Baum novel, this time set on ice and designed for all ages. This unique performance will be Portuguese in a pavilion in MAR Shopping’s parking lot. Tickets start at 13€ for the 11h and 15h shows.

This recently released, award-winning film follows Didar, a poet absorbed by his daily work on a newspaper. Upon reading the story of a famous Kazakh poet from the 19th century, Didar is deeply shaken and recognizes the harshness and demands of his vocation: he struggles between pain and joy, between successes and failures (shown in Kazakh with Portuguese subtitles). Screenings are at 18h30 and 21h30. Tickets are 5,50€ and can be purchased at the door.
Michael Jackson tribute concert, at Ageas Porto Coliseu, 21h30-23h30

This recently released, award-winning film follows Didar, a poet absorbed by his daily work on a newspaper. Upon reading the story of a famous Kazakh poet from the 19th century, Didar is deeply shaken and recognizes the harshness and demands of his vocation: he struggles between pain and joy, between successes and failures (shown in Kazakh with Portuguese subtitles). Screenings are at 18h30 and 21h30. Tickets are 5,50€ and can be purchased at the door.

Christmas Circus, at Ageas Porto Coliseu, 15h-16h30
In this relaxed session, designed for all ages, Christmas Circus reinvents itself again with the best artists and musicians performing a children's version of "Mad Max." The Christmas Circus tradition has been going on since 1941! Tickets start at 9€.

This 2022 experimental animated fantasy film uses archival footage to depict conversations in purgatory among Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill — and also features Jesus and Napoleon. Screenings are at 18h30 and 21h30. Tickets are 5,50€ and can be purchased at the door.
"Tratado, a Constituição Universal" play, at Teatro Carlos Alberto, starts 19h
This play, directed by Diogo Freitas, questions society and political systems, including democracy, for their failure to resolve issues such as fascism, racism, xenophobia, or war. On stage, four performers, "children of the 90s," reflect on these failures and address new forms of democracy (in Portuguese). Tickets are 5€.

Orfélia concert, at Maus Hábitos, starts 21h
Orfélia is a project formed by duo Filipe Mattos and Anaïs Yhinon that blends Brazilian and Portuguese folk in a union that seeks something new for the future in the traditions of the past. They bring us "Tudo o que Moves" as a starting point, a debut album that docks in a homogeneous sound somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. Tickets are 8€ and will be sold at the entrance of the event, subject to availability.

This play, directed by Diogo Freitas, questions society and political systems, including democracy, for their failure to resolve issues such as fascism, racism, xenophobia, or war. On stage, four performers, "children of the 90s," reflect on these failures and address new forms of democracy (in Portuguese). Tickets are 10€.

Traditional singers in the streets, at various locations in Porto, starts 15h30
Nine musical groups make their way from various points in the city to the Christmas tree in front of Câmara Municipal do Porto (Aliados Metro stop). Their processions begin at 15h30, and by 17h30, each group, on a first-come, first-served basis, will perform two songs. Free to attend.
